Classifier Constructions and Morphology in Two Sign Languages
نویسندگان
چکیده
We see then, in Sign, at every level—lexical, grammatical, syntactic—a linguistic use of space: a use that is amazingly complex, for much of what occurs linearly, sequentially, temporally in speech, becomes simultaneous, concurrent, multileveled in Sign. The surface of Sign may appear simple to the eye, like that of gesture or mime, but one soon finds that this is an illusion, and what looks so simple is extraordinarily complex and consists of innumerable spatial patterns nested, threedimensionally, in each other.

The Paradox of Sign Language Morphology.
Sign languages have two strikingly different kinds of morphological structure: sequential and simultaneous. The simultaneous morphology of two unrelated sign languages, American and Israeli Sign Language, is very similar and is largely inflectional, while what little sequential morphology we have found differs significantly and is derivational. We show that at least two pervasive types of infle...
متن کاملComparing action gestures and classifier verbs of motion: evidence from Australian Sign Language, Taiwan Sign Language, and nonsigners' gestures without speech.
Recent research into signed languages indicates that signs may share some properties with gesture, especially in the use of space in classifier constructions. A prediction of this proposal is that there will be similarities in the representation of motion events by sign-naive gesturers and by native signers of unrelated signed languages. This prediction is tested for deaf native signers of Aust...
متن کاملCategorical Versus Gradient Properties of Classifier Constructions in ASL
Classifier constructions in American Sign Language (ASL) were originally described as a type of mimetic depiction (Klima & Bellugi, 1979), rather than as morphologically complex signs. However, Supalla (1978, 1982) argued that classifier verbs were composed of discrete morphemes that express object form or category through handshape morphemes, object location through a “base grid” of discrete s...
متن کاملNeural systems underlying spatial language in American Sign Language.
A [(15)O]water PET experiment was conducted to investigate the neural regions engaged in processing constructions unique to signed languages: classifier predicates in which the position of the hands in signing space schematically represents spatial relations among objects. Ten deaf native signers viewed line drawings depicting a spatial relation between two objects (e.g., a cup on a table) and ...
متن کاملThe Biology of Linguistic Expression Impacts Neural Correlates for Spatial Language
Biological differences between signed and spoken languages may be most evident in the expression of spatial information. PET was used to investigate the neural substrates supporting the production of spatial language in American Sign Language as expressed by classifier constructions, in which handshape indicates object type and the location/motion of the hand iconically depicts the location/mot...
